The Science of LED Light Therapy

How specific wavelengths of light interact with skin at the cellular level — and why the frequency matters as much as the intensity.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) therapy — also called photobiomodulation — uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate biological processes in skin tissue. Unlike UV light, which damages DNA, the wavelengths used in LED therapy fall within a range that has been studied for their ability to interact with cellular components without causing harm.

The key principle is that different wavelengths penetrate skin to different depths, and at each depth they interact with different cellular targets. This is why wavelength selection is the most important variable in LED device design — not chip count alone, not power alone, but the specific frequencies delivered.

415 nm

Blue Light

415 nm — Blue Light

Blue light at 415 nm operates at a shallow depth in the skin. It is one of the shorter wavelengths used in LED therapy and is included in the ZIVA system as part of a multi-frequency approach to comprehensive skin treatment.

630 nm

Red Light

630 nm — Red Light

Red light at 630 nm is one of the most studied wavelengths in photobiomodulation research. It penetrates deeper than blue light and has been widely investigated for its effects on skin tissue. It is the primary wavelength in the ZIVA system, with 93 dedicated chips.

850 nm

Near-Infrared

850 nm — Near-Infrared

Near-infrared light at 850 nm is invisible to the human eye but penetrates more deeply than visible red light. It is a common wavelength in professional and consumer LED devices and is included in the ZIVA system with 81 dedicated chips.

1072 nm

Deep Near-Infrared

1072 nm — Deep Near-Infrared

At 1072 nm, ZIVA includes a fourth wavelength that extends beyond the range of most consumer LED masks. This deep near-infrared frequency is uncommon in at-home devices and represents one of the key technical differentiators of the ZIVA system. The ZIVA mask includes 12 dedicated 1072 nm chips.
